"Guess the Artist" is a guessing game I created after being inspired by a 6th Grade Science teacher's "Guess the Vegetable" game (he placed different obscure vegetables on top of a box and allowed students to guess what the vegetable was). Every couple weeks I would post a new famous artwork in the hallway outside the art room and allow staff and students to place their guesses of which artist created that artwork. Students and staff were very motivated to discover the correct answer. Research was encouraged :) One student was selected (from all who guessed the correct artist) to win a prize.

Master Artwork Reproductions
My gifted and talented students chose a master artwork, broke it into sections, and each reproduced that part of the artwork using the media of their choice. The squares were all assembled together when finished.

Table Artists
There are five tables (seating 4 students each) in the art room. I assigned a famous artist to each table. When I needed to speak to the students about which tables were working really well or which tables had more cleaning up to do, I would use the table artist’s name. For example: “Salvador Dali, you have a lot of paper still under your table. Please clean it up!” Or "Frida Kahlo, you all are working really well together." This technique doesn’t single out an one particular student and it encourages all the students at the table to work collaboratively. An added bonus is that the students become very familiar with these artists' names!

35 of my students' artworks were selected to be a part of the student art show at the Barn Galley in Ogunquit. This was an incredible show displaying artwork from many schools in southern Maine.
